Whether you are a college student eager to showcase your tech skills or a faculty member guiding the next generation of problem-solvers, navigating the official SIH 2026 guidelines can be a bit overwhelming.
To make things easy, here is a comprehensive breakdown of the guidelines, team formation rules, and Smart India Hackathon 2026 dates you need to secure your spot in the Grand Finale!
1. Smart India Hackathon 2026 Registration: Internal Hackathons & The SPOC
Students cannot complete the SIH 2026 registration directly on their own; everything flows through your college’s Single Point of Contact (SPOC).
- Who is the SPOC? The SPOC must be a designated senior faculty member, such as a Professor, HOD, Dean, or Principal.
- The Internal Hackathon: To even be considered for the national level, your team must first be selected in your college’s Internal Hackathon.
- Nomination Limits: A college can nominate a maximum of 50 teams (45 shortlisted and 5 waitlisted), while universities have a cap of 100 teams.
- Faculty Deliverables: SPOCs are required to upload a detailed 15-page internal hackathon report containing photos, jury details, and social media promotions using
#sih2026.
2. SIH Team Formation Rules: Building Your Dream Team
Structuring your team correctly is non-negotiable under the SIH 2026 guidelines. If you miss these criteria, your registration will be rejected:
- Team Size: Every team must have exactly 6 members, which includes the designated team leader.
- Mandatory Diversity: You must have at least one female team member.
- College Exclusivity: All 6 members must belong to the same college; inter-college teams are strictly prohibited.
- Skill Requirements: Software teams need strong programming skills, while Hardware teams are highly encouraged to build multidisciplinary squads mixing mechanical engineers, electronic engineers, and product designers.
- Team Name: Keep it unique, and never include your institute’s name in it.
3. SIH Problem Statements and Idea Submission (Act Fast!)
Once your SPOC registers your team on the portal, the team leader gets the login credentials to submit the actual ideas for the SIH problem statements.
- The 500-Idea Cap: This is critical! A single Problem Statement (PS) will only accept a maximum of 500 ideas nationally. Once 500 ideas are submitted, that specific PS is frozen and closed for new entries.
- Submission Limit: A single team can submit ideas for a maximum of 2 Problem Statements.
- Hard Deadline: The absolute final date for team nominations and idea submissions by the SPOC and Team Leader is September 30, 2026.
4. Mentorship, Grand Finale, and Prizes
If your idea shines through the evaluation criteria—which includes novelty, complexity, feasibility, and scale of impact—you are headed to the Smart India Hackathon 2026 Grand Finale!
- Mentorship: Shortlisted teams can choose to bring up to 2 mentors from industry or academia. Mentors must have at least 5 years of relevant experience.
- The Grand Finale: Prepare to travel! The finale is proposed to be held offline at various nodal centers across India in December 2026.
- Travel Perks: The organizers cover up to Rs. 3,000 per person for round-trip travel expenses (subject to actual bills).
- The Ultimate Prize: Winning teams walk away with a massive prize of Rs. 1,50,000 per problem statement! Intellectual property of the winning idea will be split equally between the industry that provided the problem statement and the winning team (or decided on mutual agreement).
