NASA’s MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE Campaign : NASA is planning to launch a mission to study icy moon of Jupiter called Europa. NASA has recently launched a campaign called NASA’s Message in a Bottle. NASA has invited people all over the world to provide there name as an entry which will be sent with the space craft that will travel to Europa in 2024.

What is NASA’s MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE Campaign?

NASA is interactively involving people in the world to be a part of their ongoing space missions. It is a great initiative taken by NASA to spread awareness and interest in space discoveries among the people on the earth. NASA’s MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE Campaign is such great step. NASA asking space enthusiasts to join their mission set to explore EUROPA an icy moon of a giant planet Jupiter. In this mission NASA is engraving names on NASA’s Europa Clipper spacecraft which will travel 1.8 billion miles to explore the icy moon Europa. It has similar but most vast ocean world like earth in that Scientist believe it may support life.

What is Europa?

Europa is one of the largest moon among Jupiter’s 90 known moons. Europa is Sixth moon that is close to the planet Jupiter. The first moons that are discovered beyond the earth by humans are Io, Ganymede, and Callisto along with Europa. These moons are called Galilean moons after the great astronomer Galileo Galilei who discovered and observed these moons by using homemade telescope by himself in January 1610.

Composition of Europa is mainly silicate rock and water ice crust. It is believed that Europa has iron-nickel core at its center. Atmosphere of Europa is very this and its atmospheric composition is mainly oxygen. Surface of Europa has cracks and screaks, but there are very few craters it seems that Europa is safe from potential asteroid impacts as Jupiter is safeguarding.

Europa is named for a woman who was abducted by the god Zeus – Jupiter in Roman mythology.

Potential for Life

Europa is marked for potential life by NASA scientists who study origin, evolution and future of life beyond earth. Europa believed to have key chemical elements called building blocks of life including Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulfur.

Key chemical elements required for life-
1. Carbon
2. Hydrogen
3. Nitrogen
4. Oxygen
5. Phosphorous
6. Sulfur

Europa Clipper Mission-

In October 2024, Europa clipper launch is scheduled. Europa clipper is NASA’s largest planetary mission spacecraft designed. It has massive solar array to generate power to fuel the one of largest spacecraft ever build by NASA accompanying with radar antennas. This Europa clipper mission is categorized as planetary mission as it will study planet within the solar system.

Jupiter a big giant has tough radiation trapped inside its magnetic field. Clipper is designed to sustain this high-energy atomic particles radiation. Thick walled vault made from titanium and aluminum will help to protect electronics from this tough radiation, this will help to slow down degradation of electronics used in Clipper spacecraft.

Europa clipper's science goal-
The main motive of sending clipper to study Europa is to identify the life beyond the earth. as Europa may have places below its icy crust that could support the life.

NASA’s Europa clipper spacecraft will perform close flyby’s of Europa. It will perform 50 flybys of Europa with closest distance will be as low as 25km above the surface. There will be different locations covered in each flyby to cover early the entire moon.
